An intense desire for a specific food item or flavour is food craving. 
Many of us can relate to this feeling of a sudden craving for a specific food and not wanting anything else besides it. Be it any comfort food, a special dish or junk food .. we kind of just want to have it.

It can be for many reasons or just no reason at all. 
For example, pregnancy, periods, stress, hunger or just thinking about food or in some cases health conditions may also cause food cravings.

Some people try very hard to stay fit, some want to lose weight, some try to cut off unhealthy food completely and these craving just make it more and more difficult for us.

In this blog we are going focus on food cravings we have regularly that we want to control.. as mostly we crave for unhealthy foods that can really affect our overall health.

7 WAYS TO STOP FOOD CRAVINGS


1. DON'T WALK OUT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH
If you step out of your house on an empty stomach, chances are pretty high of you ending up eating a lot as you are going to crave for almost every delicious unhealthy food you see on your way.
So, if you eat something before leaving you might not feel like having much when you are out. 
Eat something before stepping out even if you are going out for a meal as you might not crave that much as you already are a bit full.

2. PROTEINS HELP ALOT
Adding protein to your meal is a great way to control food cravings.
Protein makes you feel full and satisfied for long and it also helps you reduce your appetite.
Protien intake really helps control night cravings.
Add protein to your diet and see the difference yourself.

3. DON'T STAY HUNGRY FOR LONG
Hunger is one of the major reasons that people end up eating too much when they try not to.
If you starve yourself for too long, you are going to eat too much the moment you see food.
Don't let yourself stay hungry for long periods, try having some healthy snacks in between to avoid extream hunger.

4. DRINK WATER
This really helps when you feel a sudden desire of having something specific.
Drink a glass of water and wait. You might not feel that craving after a few minutes because you were actually thirsty.
Many times our mind confuses hunger or food cravings with thirst. 
If you are trying to lose weight or reduce your appetite.. drinking water before meal may help.

5. EAT PROPERLY
Another major reason of craving for food is that you don't have a proper meal.
I've mentioned it in my previous blogs that you must have a proper fulling breakfast as it helps you stay full throughout the day. 
Eating properly also means having a balanced diet. Your body needs all the necessary nutrients and lacking some of them may result in sudden food cravings.
Also when you feel hungry between you meals.. try having fruits, nuts or some healthy snacks.

6. AVOID STRESS & GET GOOD SLEEP
Stress may cause change in your eating behaviour and lead to food cravings.We end up eating more when we are stressed and also gain weight due to this. 
This happens specially in women. 

Lack of sleep often leads to poor appetite and increases food cravings.
Sleep deprivation is one of the common reasons that disrupts our normal hormone fluctuation and causes food cravings.

So, get enough sleep, get good sleep and try to minimize stress because nothing is more important than your health.

7. KNOW TO DIFFERENCE
Do not fall for the confusion your mind creates. There are some times when you are actually hungry and other times when you just feel like craving for food.
Having proper balanced diet may help you know the difference.
For example, if you feel like eating something just after you had a meal, you are probably just craving for food and must try to control your mind by distracting yourself or drinking water.
 On the other hand, if you crave for something a few hours after having a meal you may actually be hungry and therefore you must not starve yourself and snack on something healthy before your craving turns intense.


Always appreciate your efforts! We all know it's not easy to control food cravings.. and yet you are trying. Therefore you need to appreciate your efforts.

Just be aware of your cravings, don't let them take over your mind, follow these ways and don't be too hard on yourself.
